Give them a WHY instead of a WHAT

There have been hundreds of books written so far on parenting alongwith thousands of training sessions being conducted on it all across the world. And although all of these might help parents in the upbringing of their children, it is important to realise that simplicity is beautiful wherever it is applied. Hence I narrate here a little experience I went through today which was far more convincing than any well-dressed clean shaved well-spoken dude on tv telling people how to raise their kids.

One of my younger sisters is 9 years old. She asked me make her a bowl of Maggie noodles. I lit the stove, filled the pan with water, and waited for it to boil. My sister constantly kept coming near the stove and I constantly kept asking her to stay away. The water started to boil and I inserted raw noodles into it. She did the same, much to my annoyance. I started stirring, and she followed me. And even after my constant instructions to stay away from the stove, she kept on interfering the cooking process. Then I explained to her, "Listen. I am asking to stay away. Will it give me any benefit? No na. Its for YOU. I don't want YOU to burn your hand because then it will hurt really bad making you cry. Everything is REALLY hot here." It took her around 4 seconds to comprehend what I had said. The result? She quietly sat on the table as I prepared her the meal. And seeing me burn my own fingers twice gave her a practical example of what I meant!

Hence, children need a WHY more than a WHAT if you want them to do things your way.

Lyrics and translations (CS3, EP4)

Hor Vi Neevan Ho
Noori

Hor vi neevan ho
Bow your head down even further (in humility)
(Repeat)
Hor vi neevan ho fakira
Fakir, bow your head further down (in humility)
Hor vi neevan ho
Bow your head further down (in humility)
(Repeat)
Hor vi neevan ho fakira
Fakir, bow your head further down (in humility)

Uccha saroon gharoor mein

There is great pleasure in holding the head high in arrogance
(Repeat)
Kaddi naa phall paiye, fakira
But, that pleasure will never be fulfilling
(Repeat)
Hor vi neevan ho fakira
Fakir, bow your head own even further (in humility)
Paiye gaa deedar sahib da
One day you will be bestowed with His presence
Hor vi neevan ho
Bow your head further down (in humility)
(Repeat)
Ho rabba koi meray dil diyan kadraan pachanay
Lord, if only someone could understand the deliberations of my heart
Mein sawali jinna naeen koi sawal
I am a seeker who seeks nothing
Mein jogan ban dar dar phir diye
I am a wanderer, roaming from one land to another
Koi na meriyan, ramzaan pachanay
No one can unravel the secrets within me
Mein jogan ban dar dar phiriyaan way
I am a wanderer, roaming from one land to another
O koi na meriyan, ramzaan pachanay
No one can unravel the secrets within me
Mein jogan…
(Repeat)
I am a wanderer
Chal meray naal
(Repeat)
Come, come along with me
Hor vi neevan ho
Bow your head further down (in humility)
(Repeat)

Mirza Sahibaan
Arif Lohar

Hujray shah muqeem dey aik jatti arz karay
A woman from the Jatt caste appeals at a shrine
Mein bakra daindiyaan pir da meray sirr da kaunth maray
I will sacrifice a goat if You rid me of my bad luck
O hatti sarray karrar di
'Tear down the shop (which keeps the street illuminated even at night)'

(Balle Balle, Shawa Shawa)

(Repeat 1, 2 & 3)
O hath utha fakir ney o mangi ai dua
The fakir raised his arms and prayed for the woman
Jaa bibi ghar aapnay, aaj karsi fazal khuda
He then turned to the woman and asked her to go home
O sargi larka jamiya, tey keeta fazal khuda
Her prayers were answered the same day and she was blessed with a boy
Uss apnay zehan kiyas toon, ditta Mirza naam rahaan
The Jatt woman christened her newborn Mirza
O jiss din Mirza jamiya, uss din aie jumaay di raat
It was a Thursday night when Mirza was born
Unnon gutti mil gaye ishq di
And Mirza was only weaned with love
(Balle Balle, Shawa Shawa)
O Kech-nagar da Punno shahzada vich Bambhoreen aya
When Punno, the prince from Kech-nagar, came to Bhambhore
Laggi suchaat ishqay wali sir tey bhuchka chaya
He was blinded by his love
Nazak badan malook safee da ki mein karaan kahani
What can I narrate.. suffice it to say, his beloved was so fragile and delicate
Sassi tassi vich Thallan dey margai bajoon paani
But Sassi died in the deserts of Thal just waiting to have her thirst quenched
(Balle Balle, Shawa Shawa)
O Farhaday vi ishq kamaya, zaati da lohar
Even Farhad, a blacksmith by caste, earned love
Khaatir Shirin vaikhan karn, suttay patt pahar
And moved mountains to meet his Shirin
O Ranjha takht hazaray wala, zaati da au jut
(Repeat)
Even Ranjha, a Jutt from Takht-Hazaray
Jaan siyaali chaak sadhaya hoya chor chapat
Became a servant in Siyal for his love
O koorh makaan fana da, ithay baith kissay nahin rehna
This world is an illusion, nothing here is forever
Inna teriyan mahallan oday haur kisa aa baina
The palaces you build will be the abodes of someone else tomorrow
Melay hon jugg tey joondiyaan
This world is colored only by the people who reside here
